A health service in Esperance says mentally ill people are still sleeping rough due to the lack of suitable accommodation, six months after the Mental Health Minister visited the town.

Earlier this year, a local community group Bay of Isles said it was being forced to house mentally ill people in tents due to a lack of accommodation.

The Minister Helen Morton met the service and made a commitment to building a $2.5 million transitional housing complex by 2014/15.

Bay of Isles’ Matthew Baker says something needs to be done in the meantime.

“Some of these people are out for weeks, months at a time, just trying to make do, whether it be sleeping at the back of business buildings, under the tanker jetty, or wherever possible they can get somewhere to bed down for the night,” he said.

“This time of year, with our weather that we’ve been having, out in the streets, or stables or in a tent, it’s not exactly the best place to be.

“And, with the health issues that people have, being out there doesn’t do their wellbeing much good at all.”

The Minister has been contacted for comment.
