Kate Middleton to tour art therapy schools

The Duchess of Cambridge is patron of The Art Room and is due in Oxford.

Kate Middleton will tour two schools today to learn how children are using art to help with behavioural issues.

The Duchess of Cambridge is patron of The Art Room and will head to Oxford where the organisation is helping youngsters with a range of problems.

The charity maintains a dedicated art room in four secondary and primary schools in the city and one in Islington, London – running sessions from one to four days a week – and also works with a further 22 schools.

It uses art therapy to help children with issues like low self esteem and Asperger’s syndrome.

At Rose Hill Primary School in Oxford, Kate will join eight children who will be working on The Owl And The Pussycat poem by Edward Lear.

The piece is regularly used to aid discussions on travel, relationships and fantasy, and is seen as a good way of getting the children to talk.

During the event the youngsters will paint part of the story on canvas as the royal watches.

Later at Oxford Spires Academy the duchess will join a round-table discussion covering debriefing, training and supervision of all the charity’s staff in Oxford.

Juli Beattie is founder and director of The Art Room which celebrates its 10th anniversary next month.
